General Notes about Scouting in Guelph(related to the 2nd)
The 1st Guelph's charter was # 231 2nd Guelph's charter is # 268
3rd Guelph's Charter is # 232 4th Guelph's charter is # 226
There is a story about the first and the second in that they both were
applying for their charter at the same time and the first managed to get
theirs in first even though the second was operating first. When looking
at the registrations from the early years you can see that the book keeping
may not have been what it should have. ie: 3rd changed to 2nd. This also
happened between the 1st and the 2nd. It is possible that the charters
got mixed up and the 3rd was the 2nd since the 3rd's charter is one after
the 1st's. There is also a letter in the 3rd's file which asks the Boy
Scouts Of Canada to change the numbers on the registration as the boys
of the third were registered as the 2nd and vice versa.
Scouting in Guelph had its ups and downs at the beginning. It all started
around 1910 through the efforts of a man named Major Mereweather. At first
it seemed they were not organized by number but there was various groups
of boys meeting at various location. In August of 1910 the Boy Scouts were
invited to attend a 3-day camp at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.
They were the guests of the Exhibition and received free access to the
grounds, tent accommodation and all meals provided. Fifty one boys and
leaders attended from Guelph. Lord Baden Powell was also in attendance.
By 1916 there were several troops at St.James, at O.A.C., at St.Georges.
There is also mention of a group at the "Y" but it does not say
if the "Y" was its headquarters. It does say that there was 5
patrols of 10 boys each. In January 28,1922's Mercury an article says that
the 2nd Guelph Troop which met at the Congregational Church on Norfolk
Street where the Norfolk Manor now sits was asked if it would like to take
on the name of the first since it was the only group in Guelph registered
at the time. They decided to do this and so the 2nd became the 1st. Then
in March of 1922 the newspaper mentions the 2nd Troop at St George's but
there is only info on that one year. In the paper on April 15,1922 St.George's
and St.Andrews are referred to as getting together for a day hike at the
Gilson farm. It then mentions of a joint meeting of the 2nd and 3rd which
were preparing for a concert and the details of the hike were given out
. Thus I would conclude that the 2nd was St.Georges and the 3rd was ST.Andrews
at that time. In November 13,1922's paper it states that the 2nd Guelph
Troop now belongs to the Boy Scout Scripture Union and that they were presented
their membership cards. I would still assume they met at St. George's.
In 1929 the 2nd Guelph Group was started by Dublin. It has been here ever since. Beavers was started in January 1992 with the efforts of Robert B.McCuen
