2018 Scouting Ireland’s National Jamboree (JamboRi) Scouts Canada Head of Contingent

Term: August 2017 – August 2018
TIme Required: 3-5 hours per week; potential for 4-6 weekends until JamboRi, plus 2 weeks for the actual event.


From July 25th, to August 2nd, 2018, approximately 5,000 Scouts and Ventures from Ireland and around the world will assemble in the Electric Picnic site at Stradbally Hall, Co. Laois for Scouting Ireland’s National Jamboree. Scouts Canada is preparing to support a Canadian Contingent to JamboRi and is seeking a dedicated and capable volunteer to spearhead this effort in collaboration with relevant youth, Scouts Canada staff and the International Programs Team.
Scouts Canada is seeking to appoint a Head of Contingent to oversee Scouts Canada’s participation in this event.
The Contingent Leader will work in partnership with the International Commissioner, the National Key 3, and others, to deliver this life changing experience for young people from all parts of the country. This will include: 
  • Establishing the key objectives for the Contingent;
  • Establishing a small Contingent Management Team (CMT), including youth representation, and leading them; 
  • Establishing an event budget to be approved by the National Leadership Team and to work within this budget for the duration of the project;
  • Establishing a concept for Scouts Canada’s Contingent Experience;
  • Liaising with the event organizers in Ireland;
  • Overseeing the marketing and recruitment of the Contingent;
  • Overseeing the preparations for the Contingent;
  • Leading the Contingent during their time in Ireland; 
  • Working within boundaries and guidelines expected of all national volunteers: and
  • Gaining event concept approval from the International Commissioner and the National Leadership Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

The role of the Head of Contingent will be a national position reporting directly to the International Commissioner, will be a Member of the International Programs Team, and will be supported by the international staff support person based at the National Office in Ottawa.

Responsible for: Contingent Management Team, JamboRi 2018
Function: To lead Scouts Canada’s Contingent to 2018 Scouting Ireland’s National Jamboree as defined in the introduction to this document, including supporting the Contingent during the event. 
Feedback: To produce interim reports in the build up to the event, including one to the National Leadership Team, as well as a feedback and conclusion report to the International Commissioner following the 2018 Scouting Ireland’s National Jamboree to be used by future Contingent Leaders.

Personal Circumstances

The successful applicant for this role will: 
  • Be available to attend the JamboRi between July 25th, to August 2nd, 2018;
  • Be able to commit to attending meetings for a minimum of 12 days or weekends in addition to the event as required;
  • Be prepared to work remotely using a variety of techniques to remain in touch; and
  • Be capable of spending two weeks under canvas, working in the outdoors.

Skills and Experience

The successful applicant for this role should: 
  • Demonstrate an ability to inspire and lead young people aged between 14 and 17; 
  • Demonstrate an ability to plan projects strategically and to provide a clear vision; 
  • Be capable of building personal relationships effectively at all levels and to manage a team in a constructive and engaging way;
  • Be a quick learner and be willing to adapt and make compromises where necessary; 
  • Understand the multi-cultural nature of World Scouting and demonstrate sensitivity and openness to all, regardless of background, ethnicity, religious or sexual orientation;
  • Have experience of a major international Scouting event. Experience as a member of the International Service team or a Contingent Support/Management Team would be an advantage; and
  • Be a member of the Scouts Canada and ideally have experience as a Venturer Scout or Rover Scout.
