What is the Medal of the Maple Award?
The Medal of the Maple is an award for Distinguished Youth Service created by the members of the National Youth Network. It honours those youth who have significantly contributed to the Movement and the spirit of Scouting through community service, extraordinary Scouting participation and a solid system of personal values.
Who is eligible for the Medal of the Maple?
Any member under 26 years of age who is registered in a participant section. Exceptions are situational.
Who can nominate a member for the Medal of the Maple?
Any member of Scouts Canada may nominate a youth for the Medal of the Maple.
Who adjudicates the award applications?
The applications are reviewed by a committee consisting of the Council Youth Commissioner (or designate) the Council Commissioner (or designate) and two or three other members. The Council Youth Commissioner would ordinarily chair this group.
What if the Council Youth Commissioner is being nominated?
Applications for CYC’s, or other members of the National Youth Network, are adjudicated by the Council Commissioner and two or three other members. The National Youth Commissioner may be consulted if desired.
What happens after an application is approved by the Medal of the Maple adjudication committee?
The recognition items can be ordered by the council’s DCC-Recognition through the normal channels for national awards.
What form of recognition is given to a Medal of the Maple recipient?
Medal of the Maple recipients receive a certificate of recognition, a uniform flash and a medal to be worn around the neck (i.e. similar to a Medal of Merit).
How is the uniform flash worn? How is it oriented? What if the recipient holds other awards?
The uniform flash is placed above the right-hand pocket (see BP&P Section 8000), to the far right of other award flashes. The red rope should be oriented to the right and the white rope should be oriented to the left.
When and how should the Medal of the Maple be presented to a recipient?
This is up to the discretion of the Council Youth Commissioner or Area Youth Commissioner, in consultation with the council recognition team. Presentations at high profile events, such as Queen’s Venturer Ceremonies, are encouraged to increase prestige and recognition of the award.
How is receipt of a Medal of the Maple recorded?
An option to record a member’s receipt of a Medal of the Maple is included in the MMS and should be updated upon presentation of the award.
