Inauguration of Remembrance Trails

Scouts Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada and the Royal Canadian Legion have developed six "Pass the Torch" Remembrance Trails, which will be made available to youth and volunteers at Scout camps across Canada.

One of the trails will be unveiled at Lake Tamaracouta in Quebec by Glenn Armstrong, Chief Commissioner of Scouts Canada, together with representatives of the Government of Canada and the Royal Canadian Legion. The unveiling will take place at CJ'07 on July 25, 2007.

The interpretative remembrance trails were created to serve as an interesting educational tool for Scouts Canada youth and volunteers. The trails are a reminder of those who have made sacrifices on behalf of all Canadians to support the values of Freedom, Truth, Justice, Knowledge, and Peace for all people worldwide.

The trails feature five plaques that serve as learning points for youth walking along the pathway. The plaques convey true stories and experiences, providing readers with the opportunity to reflect on Canada's past service in the wars, including current day peacekeeping efforts. The series of plaques describe:

  • What We Are Remembering on Remembrance Day - The Poppy; Flanders Field
  • The First World War (1914-1918) - Canadians at War; Life in the Trenches
  • The Second World War (1939-1945) - Growing Up During War Time; Women During WWII
  • The Korean War (1950 1953) - War Again; Canada's Development as a Nation of Peacekeepers
  • Canadian Forces Support of Peace Efforts - Todays Living Heroes; Peacekeepers; Search-and-Rescue Operations

Along with the plaques, interpretive booklets are available to assist youth as they walk through the trails. These booklets have been developed as a resource to support and embellish each plaque. To view the booklet as well as images of the five plaques, please visit www.scouts.ca

The six Scouts Canada sites featuring these trails will include Camp Byng in British Columbia, Camp Samac in Ontario, Camp Yoho in New Brunswick, Camp Nedooae in Nova Scotia, Camp Woods in Alberta, and Camp Tamaracouta in Quebec.

Funding for the Scouts Canada "Pass the Torch Remembrance Trails" program was provided by The Community Engagement Partnership Fund, administered through Veterans Affairs Canada Remembers program. The fund supports non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events.
