PCC will match your Haiti fundraising efforts!
The Pacific Coast Council Management Team voted unanimously to contribute up to $10,000 from its reserve funds to give added incentive for local members to take an active role in the aiding of earthquake‐ravaged Haiti. The earmarked funds will be used to match members’ donations or collections to the Scouts Canada Foundation – Haiti Relief received before February 12, 2010. All funds raised will go directly to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Fund.

North and West Vancouver Scout Groups Pledge $4000
Five North and West Vancouver Scout Groups, 1st West Vancouver, 3rd West Vancouver, 6th St, Agnes, 21st Capilano and 31st Capilano, have pledged $4000 from the proceeds of their annual Christmas Tree Sale to the Scouts Canada Foundation – Haiti Relief. Scouts Canada will forward these funds directly to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Fund.

The devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010 has caused catastrophic damage and massive fatalities and casualties. The Haitian government fears fatalities could reach 200,000, and the United Nations has described the earthquake as the greatest natural disaster in living memory.

The North and West Vancouver Scout Groups encourage other Scout Groups and service organizations to do what they can to help the people of Haiti recover from this disaster which has devastated their country.

 Calling all Artists and Filmmakers…

Every year, Citizenship and Immigration Canada hosts two competitions geared towards youth across the country. The competitions are promoted to youth via schools, various youth groups and organizations and their objective is to promote multiculturalism.

The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge is an annual writing and artwork contest that is open to youth between the ages of 9 and 18. The Challenge encourages young Canadians to embark on their own personal voyage of discovery by learning about the contributions that Canadians of different backgrounds have made in building our country. The contest invites young Canadians to submit an original piece of writing (e.g. short story, poem, song, play, illustrated story, essay, etc.) or artwork (including computer generated artwork) celebrating the contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African or other backgrounds to the building of Canada. Contest deadline is February 19, 2010.

The Racism. Stop It! National Video Competition (NVC) is a key part of Canada’s March 21 Campaign against racial discrimination. NVC mobilizes thousands of youth across Canada, between the ages of 12 and 20, to take a stand and express their feelings about eliminating racism through video. The contest invites young Canadians to create a video between 45 and 60 seconds in length. Contest deadline is January 15, 2010.

Both contests have great prizes! Each winner in both competitions will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Ottawa in April 2010; VIP seating at either the Mathieu Da Costa or the Racism. Stop It! National Video Competition Awards Ceremonies, as well as other exciting prizes that are up for grabs!

Groups interested in promoting this great opportunities for youth can pick up a full package at the office after Monday November 23rd with further information, posters and pins.

Time is running out for your Olympic Opportunity!
The Opening and Closing Ceremonies Team of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics is offering Scouting youth an amazing opportunity to be part of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.  Registered Scouts and Venturers born between 1992 and 1995, inclusive, have been invited to participate in the closing ceremonies performance, and be Canadian ambassadors for the world.

An email letter/invitation outlining this opportunity was emailed to all registered youth who meet the age requirement and for whom we have an email address in the Membership Management System (MMS) in mid July.  A second invitation for those who have not yet responded will be sent out on behalf of VANOC from bcy@scouts.ca starting this week, finishing early next week. If you have not received your email invitation please review your filters, junk and spam folders.

This is an exciting and once in a lifetime opportunity we would like to offer to all Venturers and 2008-2009 third year Scouts.

If you have any questions regarding the Closing Ceremonies volunteer opportunity, please contact Viki Fanous at 604-220-8381 or Jennifer Koel at 604-230-8619 or VANOC by email.
