Scouts Canada Announces Climate Change Education Action Program

OTTAWA, March 26, 2004 - Scouts Canada today announced that it has developed a new Climate Change Education Action Program (CCEAP) for its members.  Over 100,000 Canadian youth will have the opportunity to actively contribute to reducing greenhouse gasses – a cause of climate change.

Scouts Canada, in collaboration with an Ottawa environmental firm, the Delphi Group, has developed a comprehensive climate change program that will include awareness activities, ideas on how to reduce household greenhouse gas emissions and instructions on how to conduct an energy audit. To complement our current environmental programming, leaders will be encouraged to work with youth on the activities during their regular weekly section meetings.

“The CCEAP fits in well with Scouts Canada’s mission to help build a better world.  We have a long history of environmentalism through planting Scoutrees, bottle drive recycling, community clean-ups, and no trace camping,” explained Scouts Canada’s Chief Commissioner, Mike Scott.  “Climate change is a critical issue for all Canadians.  This new program will bring about awareness and action among Canadian Scouting youth and their families.”

The CCEAP is supported by funding from the Government of Canada’s Climate Change Action Fund.   Sponsors of the program include Alcan Inc. (for a two year period), and Nexen Inc. (for a one year period).

“This program reflects Alcan’s commitment to corporate sustainability and our support for community action on climate change.  Scouts Canada’s focus in this area makes them a natural partner,” said Daniel Gagnier, Senior Vice-President, Corporate and External Affairs, Alcan Inc.

"Nexen believes that education and communication on global issues such as climate change are essential for informed debate and decision-making.  This program will encourage youth to develop knowledge on environmental stewardship and the wise use of resources," commented Charles W. Fischer, President and  CEO of Nexen.

"Working with Scouts Canada to help young people use energy more wisely and reduce greenhouse gas emissions reflects our company's mission," said Christopher Henderson, CEO of the Delphi Group.

For the past several months, Scout groups from across have been testing the new Climate Change Education and Action Program resources which include new requirements for existing environment-related badges and a climate change award.  Scouting youth can begin participating in the program in September 2004.

Scouts Canada, the country’s leading youth organization, offers fun and exciting outdoor adventure for boys, girls and youth aged 5-26 in communities across Canada.  Over 84,000 young people enjoy Scouts Canada’s programs, which are provided by 25,000 caring and committed leaders.
