OHIYO AREA OFFERS S.O.L.O. WILDERNESS FIRST AID CERTIFICATION
Accidents can and do happen on ropes courses, along country roads, or in the wilderness and all too often members of a group are not capable of dealing with the emergency. Not only does this lead to improper care of the patient, but it may also endanger the entire group. Studies have shown that many recreational accidents are preventable, and that improper care of trauma can compound even the simplest of injuries.
Through their involvement in emergency medicine and rescue efforts, S.O.L.O. (Stonehearth Outdoor Learning Opportunities) instructors offer training which stresses preparedness and prevention, encompasses all phases of off-road emergencies and focuses on extended care issues in prolonged transport situations.
The Ohiyo Area Service Team is again offering certification with S.O.L.O. in Basic Wilderness First Aid through Vanier College professor Joe Twardowski. Designed specifically for group leaders, this 16-hour program covers topics ranging from preparation and prevention to assessment and treatment. Classroom lectures and discussions are supplemented by practical work and problem-solving exercises. The emphasis is always on hands-on experience. Scenarios are an important part of this training.
There are three weekends available: January 29-31, February 12-14 and February 26-28. The course will take place at Camp Tamaracouta. The cost is $165 which includes certification, course materials, instruction, special evening exercises, two night’s lodging and five meals.
To sign up please call Alison Bentley at 450-458-8076 or email her at alison.bentley@sympatico.ca.
8th Annual Ohiyo Area WILDERNESS Rescue Camp-November 20-22nd, 2009
This is our Annual Area wide Scout camp open to all Scouts and Venturers in the Ohiyo Area. Expect over 100 participants for the weekend and 30-40 volunteers. We will be running Search & Rescue scenarios on Saturday for Scouts where a Patrol with a Leader will pretend to be on an overnight hike and come across some kind of accident or disaster where they will be required to access and assist or possibly evacuate victims. Debriefings will be done immediately after each scenario with a general debrief after dinner on Saturday night in the Mess Hall which everyone will attend. This is an awesome camp, which is a true test of you and your troops ability to deal with outdoor emergencies and is also a lot of fun for all concerned.
Please register with Tamaracouta Scout Reserve directly for your camping and Saturday Dinner. Camp fees $7.50 per camper per night and the Dinner is $8.50
Participation Registration form here and a fee of $5.00 per person will be required, fill it in, save it then email it to Jessica MacKay directly.
