The Scouts Canada STEM program is designed to promote interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) among Scouting youth and their families. STEM has long been an integral part of the Scouting experience, from building shelters and learning how to use navigation devices to connecting with and understanding the natural ecosystems around us. With a new emphasis on STEM, we hope to provide our youth and Volunteers with valuable tools and resources to make the most of their Scouting experience.
Relying on the Scouting practice of “learning by doing”, we aim to ignite curiosity, foster innovation and create a climate in which youth can see themselves as future leaders in the fields of science and technology. A variety of STEM activities will allow members to explore, design, build, and perform fun experiments and make interesting discoveries. Through this process, youth improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They develop into well-rounded individuals eager to learn and discover, and ready to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.
We have a pool of STEM Trail Cards for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers to help youth and Scouters make STEM a part of their Scouting programs. The Trail Cards follow the “Plan-Do-Review” model to guide youth through activities. They include a list of the materials the group will need and links to online resources. You can find the Trail Cards below, or by visiting your Section specific page of the website. Look for the STEM icon to find them.
We are always working on expanding the amount of Trail Cards on the website. The best ideas are those that have been tried and tested in the field. If you have worked on a STEM activity with your Section, or if you have ideas that you think can develop into interesting activities, let us know. You can send your ideas to: email@example.com.
STEM kits are a great way to start your exploration of STEM on The Canadian Path. The kits provide Trail Cards, manuals and materials for several STEM activities designed around a common theme. They will help your Section to plan, do and review exciting STEM activities with ease. The kits can be used over the course of a few meetings, or in a camp. We currently have the Around the Pond kit for Beaver Scouts, Space Exploration kit for Cub scouts and the Robotics kit for Scouts. Check the locations for each kit to see if they are currently available in your area.
Let’s Talk Science and Scouts Canada have joined forces to assist Scouts and Scouters with running STEM activities in their Sections. Let’s Talk Science is a national charitable organization that focuses on science education and outreach support to youth development. They create and deliver unique, accessible learning programs and services that engage children and youth in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Scouts Canada is partnering with Canada’s leading STEM organizations to deliver an engaging, innovative and hands-on STEM program.
To help foster the curiosity and practical skills in areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Scouts Canada has developed and integrated STEM programming into our overall program. By providing informal educational activities for youth and young adults aged 5 to 26, we hope to excite, engage and evoke a passion for STEM subjects and nurture the next generation of scientists, engineers and mathematicians.
