Company Scouters

The Venturer Scout program provides an exciting and enriching experience at one of the most important periods of development in a young person’s life. Venturer Scouts (ages 15–17) have an opportunity to enrich their Company and themselves by setting and achieving goals, measuring progress, developing in each of the SPICES and realizing their potential as members of Canadian society.

On The Canadian Path, Venturer Scouts focus on the importance of developing character. Less emphasis is placed on Company structure and authority, and more on building a team that takes advantage of the entire skill set of the group. Venturer Scouts may muster into large groups that provide greater social-development opportunities and allow Venturer Scouts to work together to ensure everyone reaches his or her personal summit. However, the main focus for the Venturer Scout is on personal development—a Solo Climb.

Company Scouters were called “Advisors” in the past, and this remains your role as a Company Scouter facilitating the Canadian Path program. Provide helpful advice to your Company, and give the Venturers every opportunity to lead and to learn by doing

Scouters' Tips for Company Scouters

Adventure

Scouts explore new things, share new ideas, learn new skills and create new paths.

Plan-Do-Review

A three step process informs all activities in the Canadian Path program.

Spices

Social, Physical, Intellectual, Character, Emotional and Spiritual are the six dimensions of personal development for the Canadian Path program.

Youth-Led

The program is directed by its youth members—not the Scouters.

Canadian Path Fundamentals Training

Throughout this past year, the Canadian Path team has launched a number of videos and resources aimed at helping Scouters and youth understand what the Canadian Path means to them and their Section. These resources have now been rolled into a brand new training course called Canadian Path Fundamentals. This course summarizes everything we’ve learned about the Canadian Path in the past year in one convenient place!

This course is supplemental for all existing Scouters, meaning that it’s up to you whether you’d like to take it, but will be added to the existing Wood Badge Part 1 courses so that new Scouters are up to date on what we covered last year.

You can find it in either English or French in the David Huestis Learning Centre course catalogue. Just search for “Canadian Path”!

    Youth Leadership Training

    Overview

Scouts Canada’s all-new Youth Leadership Training courses have been created for all five Sections, from Beaver Scouts to Rover Scouts! In fact, the program was spearheaded by a team of youth from across Canada.

Each group of youth participants can create a unique collection of adventures to explore five leadership knowledge areas, including Becoming a Leader, Communication, Plan-Do-Review, Problem Solving and Teamwork. Youth from older Sections facilitate the adventures—while adult Scouters take a step back from the action.

    YLT Trail Cards

With guidance from Scouters, these workshops are led by youth, for youth. Following the practices, principles and resources of The Canadian Path including Trail Cards, the program’s flexibility allows youth to Plan, Do and Review adventures that they choose as a team.

    Tip for Scouters

As a Scouter, you can be a facilitator of a YLT workshop, but it’s ideal for senior youth to facilitate the activities for younger members. Support the facilitators and set them up for success by ensuring the they commit plenty of time to preparing the workshop they’ll facilitate and review their plans in detail with them ahead of time.
