Great Scouting experiences come to life because of the contributions you and your fellow Scouters make on a regular basis. We know that you give a lot of time, passion and heart. We want to ensure you are receiving the support you need so we can achieve our joint mission of developing well-rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world.
That is why we are committed to providing Scouters with opportunities to provide feedback and guidance. The annual Volunteer Satisfaction Survey is just one feedback mechanism that helps us better understand how a positive Scouter experience can be delivered more consistently across Canada. The insights and suggestions received from this survey act as a guide as we work to continuously improve the Scouter experience.
The 2017 Volunteer Satisfaction Survey was emailed on July 31st, 2017. Open for two weeks, the survey collected 3,594 responses, representing roughly 18% of our Volunteer membership. The results of the survey have been shared with your Council Service Team and they will be working to implement the recommendations.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback in this recent survey. Scouters concerns were heard loud and clear. Over the months to follow, we will be working hard to improve the Scouter experience based on the insights received. You were clear that there is room for improvement on three fronts:
- Building a stronger and more positive relationship with/amongst Scouters
- Ensuring that training meets the needs of new Scouters
- Increasing developmental support and constructive feedback for Scouters
In order to ensure Scouters have the tools they need it is essential that a strong and positive relationship exists between Scouts Canada and Scouters. The recent survey reported a feeling of disconnect expressed by Scouters between themselves and Scouts Canada, which is why steps will be taken to strengthen the relationship.
One such example is the Monthly Volunteer Satisfaction Survey which was launched in October of 2017 to provide you with an avenue to provide feedback on a more regular basis. This is a scaled down version of the annual Volunteer Satisfaction Survey and takes roughly two minutes to complete. To avoid survey fatigue, one third of Scouters will be invited to participate each month. In order to keep you updated on the steps we will be taking to address your feedback, a new Scouter Experience article will be on ScoutingLife.ca at the beginning of every Program Cycle.
You and your fellow Scouters were also clear that you find the amount of training that individuals need to complete to become a Volunteer is a barrier to starting and sustaining a positive experience. We are going to take a serious look at reducing the amount of training required for an individual to become a Scouter while still equipping them with the skills that they need to be successful.
Scouters also identified opportunities to improve our eLearning platform, particularly in terms of the user interface and functionality on mobile devices (it is currently recommended that eLearning is accessed from a computer). Ensuring that our eLearning platform meets the needs of Scouters will be a priority in 2018.
A working group of Scouters will be established to review our Learning Management System and to propose recommendations for enhancement. Providing Scouters with regular feedback and guidance has been identified as a major driver of engagement. At the time of the survey, only 49% of Scouters felt that they received the feedback necessary to grow. While the Volunteer Support Toolkit is full of resources pertaining to feedback and guidance, Commissioners and other Support Scouters do not necessarily receive training in their use. Several new eLearning courses are in production which will provide Commissioners and other Support Scouters with the skills and resources necessary to support Scouter development. Launching in 2018, these new eLearning courses will, for the first time ever, allow Scouters to obtain Wood Badge I for Commissioners online.
We recognize the vital role you play in executing our shared vision of Canadian youth making a meaningful contribution to creating a better world. These are just the first steps that will be taken to address these concerns raised in the survey.
