Every year for over 20 years the Russell Lions Club has been running their food drive to support the Good Neighbours Food Bank in Embrun. The 2nd Russell Scouts helped with the Lions Club food drive last year as their Good Turn, and youth were unanimous in wanting to do it again.
This year, April 29, 2017, 32 2nd Russell Youth and 35 Scouters and parent volunteers joined the 20 Lions Club members for a door to door food drive in Russell, ON. They collected donations at the Russell Foodland and ordered $2000 worth of food using Good Turn Week funds. They collected over 3 tonnes of food, surpassing their goal of 2 tonnes. They sold 85 $5 grocery store donation bags, and collected cash donations from the community.
The youth had fun, as you can see from their smiles, and they made a difference. They cemented friendships with each other and with the Lions and helped build a stronger community, contributing to food security for poor families in our region during the summer months when donations are lower. The 2nd Russell Beaver colony built 20 birthday boxes, a big hit with families. These include everything a child would need to celebrate their birthday, such as cake, icing, sprinkles, party plates, napkins, decorations and party favours. The Venturers prepared new maps so the canvassing areas would be smaller and easier to manage. The Good Neighbours Food Bank were so very thankful for the positive outcome and we can’t wait for next year!
