Camp Warden — Camp Samac

We are hiring a Camp Warden for Camp Samac — located in Oshawa. Camp Samac’s summer programs are operated by Scouts Canada, and are open for ALL children in the communities we serve! Reporting directly to the Operations Manager as the on-site Property Manager, the Camp Warden is responsible for all elements of site maintenance; user groups’ needs, booking administration and related finances, as well as coordinating contractors and other 3rd party supports. The Camp Warden is responsible for supervising year-round and seasonal property staff as well as collaborating with volunteers, and ensuring safety and well-rounded program delivery.

Specifically, you will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Regular inspections and maintenance of facilities and ensuring facilities meet Scouts Canada and legal safety standards
  • Comply with, and ensure that camp users comply with Scouts Canada risk management procedures and Government regulations
  • Work with property staff and volunteers to manage elements set out in the Camp Samac Business Plan, and
  • Monitor on-site activities to ensure that safety standards are applied by users, committee members, and kitchen staff
  • Conduct drinking water and sewage tests as required by the Ministry of Environment regulations
  • Work cooperatively with local Police, Health, Fire, Environmental and Safety officials
  • Prepare and manage annual maintenance budget, along with the Summer Camp Director
  • Maintain of water system and related septic systems. Responsible for winterizing of camp water systems
  • Report any damage or concerns to the Properties Team, and execute action plan to remediate the situation
  • Maintain compliance records for quarterly and year-end submissions
  • Ensure positive experience by campers and provide facility tours when requested
  • Support positive relationships with facility neighbors and local community
  • Assist with the marketing of the Camp facilities
  • Provide administrative support in regards to camp bookings, provide excellent customer service to Scouters and other users’ inquiries
  • Complete timely uploading of availability calendars to camp website
  • Oversee schedules and tasks for staff and volunteers
  • Conduct monthly review of financial status relating to deposits, balance owing and overdue accounts, work with bookkeeper to rectify overdue accounts
  • Review and report on camp performance metrics on a monthly basis, and review with Operations Manager and Camp Committee Chair

Education, Experience & Skills

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience
  • Certified Operator of Small Drinking Water Systems, or attain certification within 2 months of employment
  • General knowledge of building and equipment maintenance and repair, and light construction
  • Knowledge of applicable fire safety, environmental, health and safety and other legislation and procedures
  • Knowledge of administrative and basic accounting practices
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Hold valid driver’s license

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Irregular working hours including evenings and weekends
  • Frequent exposure to environmental conditions (rain, snow, heat and cold)
  • Most work outside year round
  • Regular exposure to hazardous materials, including: flammable gases, oils, paints, cleaners, and chlorine
  • Risk of personal injury
  • Occupancy on site is required
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Climbing ladders and work above head frequently
  • Pushing, pulling and bending over frequently
  • Operating machinery
  • Must remain discrete and maintain high levels of confidentiality
  • Must role model values of Scouts Canada including the Child and Youth Safety program.
  • PRC (Police Record Check) and VSS (Vulnerable Sector Check) required
  • Mandatory training requirement
