Program Support Manager, Outdoor Adventure Specialist — Southern Ontario

Scouts Canada is seeking a Program Support Manager, Outdoor Adventure Specialist to join our Scouting Experience team in Southern Ontario. Reporting to the Associate Director, Program Support and as a key member of the Scouting Experience team, you will be responsible for jointly accountable for managing the local Adventure Support team and implementing the Program Support strategy. Key success measures will include Outdoor Adventure Skills Badge Program progression, outdoor activity, Certified Scouters, engagement, course attendance and Section program quality through the Canadian Path Navigator and Program Quality Assessment.

Specifically, you will be responsible for:

Drive Outdoor Adventure  

  • Develop and manage Scouts Canada’s outdoor adventure strategy in support of great, safe Scouting adventures. 
  • In collaboration with local Outdoor Adventure Commissioners, ensure that Section Scouters and Scouting youth have access to learning opportunities, which support and enhance outdoor skills and competencies.  
  • Implementing and coordinating Outdoor Adventure Skills aligned third party certifications (e.g. First Aid, Paddling, etc). 
  • Recruitment, development and management of the local Outdoor Skills network. 
  • Strengthen relationships with like-minded partner organizations. 
  • Identify and prioritize opportunities to improve Scouts Canada’s ability to deliver safe outdoor adventures. 
  • Enable continuous improvement through the establishment of national outdoor skills networks. 

Build the Scouting Community

  • In collaboration with local Outdoor Adventure Commissioners, ensure the Section Scouters have access to learning opportunities which with support and enhance their ability to deliver adventurous Scouting programs by implementing the deployment of experiential learning workshops and certifications for Scouts Canada volunteers. 
  • Recruitment, development and management of passionate volunteer teams to manage oversight of local program support events and ensuring compliance to Scouts Canada Adventure standards. 

Stakeholder Engagement and Consultation 

  • Providing stakeholders with regular status updates regarding Outdoor Adventure Program Support team activities. 
  • Consulting with stakeholders to understand program and volunteer support requirements. 
  • Coordinating with local Scouting Relationship Managers and Group Support Scouters to provide focused Section Support where required. 

Other Duties

  • As a non-profit with a relatively small staff team there will be occasions where other responsibilities or projects will be assigned.

Education, Experience & Skills

  • The ability to develop positive, effective working relationships with staff, volunteers and members
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey safety information in a positive and engaging manner
  • Strong project management skills to see program projects through from development, execution and evaluation
  • Team player and the ability to positively influence a collaborative environment
  • Energetic, motivated self-starter with a strong drive for results
  • A passion for Scouts Canada’s Mission and in-depth knowledge of Scouts Canada’s policies, procedures, standards and program are essential. 
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a volunteer management related role. 
  • Knowledge of Bylaw, Policies and Procedures, Scouting program, and Scouts Canada structure 
  • Related post secondary education or combination of education and work experience. 
  • In-depth knowledge in the following areas: Adult learning and development, Outdoor recreation and education and Event management 
  • Outdoor enthusiast who is familiar with or currently certified in relevant qualifications such as; Paddle Canada, First Aid, Lifeguard, Ropes course, Scuba diving, Rock climbing, Sailing, Leave No Trace, etc. 

Working Conditions

  • Works in a home-office environment 
  • Travels up to 10,000 kilometres per year 
  • Overnights - Approximately 20 per year 
  • Travel conditions - Reasonable to occasionally difficult 
  • Non-traditional working hours including evenings and weekends 
  • Must role model values of Scouts Canada including the Child and Youth Safety program.
  • PRC (Police Record Check) and VSS (Vulnerable Sector Check) required
  • Mandatory training requirement
