Senior Camp Director — Ottawa

Scouts Canada is seeking a Senior Camp Director to join our Property Operations Team, this position will report into one of our National Head Office (Ottawa).

Reporting to the Director, Property Operations and as a key member of the Property Operations Team, you will contribute to providing a safe and positive Scouting experience aligned with the Canadian Path by overseeing Camp Directors and ensuring that camp programming and properties are operated and staffed in accordance with legislation and regulations.

Specifically, you will be responsible for:

Hiring, onboarding, training and performance monitoring and management of camp staff

  • Lead with the hiring, training, performance monitoring and management of Camp Directors
  • Oversee and assist with the hiring, training, performance monitoring and management of camp staff
  • Work with the Human Resources team to ensure that all policies and process are followed and employees are compliant
  • Support and provide leadership to all Camp Directors including in the development and delivery of business plans and budgeting
  • Management oversight, mentoring and supporting Camp Directors for properties that deliver residential and day camp programming
  • Creating a network of Camp Directors and providing them with opportunities to interact and learn from one another

Mitigating risk and managing incidents

  • Manage risk factors associated with operations and programming
  • Investigate, manage and oversee all major incidents and serious concerns including but not limited to youth protection, bullying, harassment and evacuations
  • Monitor and oversee Camp Director management of all minor incidents
  • Ensure all emergency plans are in place, up-to-date and known by all site personnel including, but not limited to fire, medical emergency, wild animals, natural disasters and other threats
  • Identifying all equipment regulations and ensuring that all equipment used at Scouts Canada’s properties is safe and compliant

Program alignment and development

  • Ensuring all camp programs operate consistently in alignment with the Canadian Path and adhere to Scouts Canada policies and procedures
  • Regular review of camp programming and recommending changes and improvements to better enhance the overall experience for all participants

Overseeing and advising on camp budgets

  • Monitoring camp budgets for camps within purview and making recommendations to Director Property Operations

Collaborating and supporting the Properties Team

  • Collaborating and working with all members of the Properties Team on tasks and projects to further enhance Scouts Canada’s mission, objectives and priorities

Education, Experience & Skills

  • Post secondary education or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience as a Camp Director is considered a strong asset
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities including coaching with an ability to work both strategically and operationally
  • Understanding of legislation and regulations pertaining to camps including but not limited to water management, fire regulations and annual inspections
  • Experience with development and monitoring of emergency plans
  • Proven success overseeing investigations and managing incidents
  • Minimum 2 years experience with risk management and mitigation
  • Experience with financial management and budget oversight
  • Demonstrated experience hiring, training, mentoring and monitoring performance of employees
  • Proficient with MS Office including Word, Excel, Outlook & PowerPoint
  • Must role model values of Scouts Canada including the Child and Youth Safety program.
  • PRC (Police Record Check) and VSS (Vulnerable Sector Check) required

Working Conditions

  • Irregular hours such as evening and weekend work may be required
  • Primarily working in an office environment, but travel to camp properties (outdoor, wilderness environments) may be required
  • Sitting at a computer for extended periods of time
  • Must remain discrete and maintain high levels of confidentiality
  • Mandatory training requirement
