General Description

The Staff In Training are responsible for the support of all areas of camp operation as needed. By exposing S.I.T.s to many different areas they will gain experience and an understanding of which area they may want to work in during future summers. This may include assisting other staff with basic maintenance projects, food preparation, general store duties, assisting program staff with equipment prep/maintenance or with program delivery. Other duties as required. S.I.T.s must possess strong collaboration skills & be passionate about working with scouting youth. This position requires adaptability & a desire for personal growth.

You’ve been to many camps and are now interested in trying out your own leadership abilities. Making the move from camper to staff is one of the most fun and rewarding experiences imaginable. The program will involve leadership and skill development. S.I.T.s will spend time learning about and experiencing all aspects of HSR’s operations and programs while being supported by camp staff. Communication skills, teaching and learning styles, tips and techniques for leading sessions, and managing behavior are a few of the skills that will be learned in both formal an informal settings. Many S.I.T.s apply to become staff members the following summer. This is a volunteer position for the full summer. You must be or become a member of Scouts Canada and will need Standard First Aid with CPR-C and a Pleasure Craft Operator Card by the start of the summer All S.I.T.s must:

  • Be 15 years of age in 2024.
  • Be or become a member of Scouts Canada.
  • Have Valid Standard First Aid with CPR certification.
  • Have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Be an effective role model to campers and This includes but is not limited to:
    • Living the vision, mission, and values of Scouts Canada
    • Respectful treatment of all campers/staff
    • Compliance with all rules/regulations
    • Appropriate communication and interactions prior to, during and after camp
    • Maintaining a clean & safe work/living environment and general behavior throughout the employment period
    • Displaying enthusiasm for activities, personal cleanliness, dress, speech, manners, and positive relations with campers/staff.
  • Provide support to program staff assisting in; program delivery, clean up, equipment preparation, ect.
  • Assisting kitchen staff; food preparation and safety, clean up, dishes, lifting ect.
  • Support the store operations; cleaning, inventory, customer service, ect.
  • Responsible for supporting counselors with aspects of the leadership development and camper programs, including helping to plan activities and required materials.
  • Actively participate in the resolution of concerns that may arise within the team or with campers and implement appropriate processes for the management of such.
  • Notify the S.I.T Coordinator and Camp Director of any concerns as they arise.
  • Be prepared and on time for all shifts assigned
  • Work independently and as team to complete tasks set
  • Lift up to 15kg (30 lbs) safely and stand for extended periods of
  • Responsible for coordinating all aspects of the leadership development and camper programs, including planning activities and required materials.
  • Responsible for all equipment used in the assigned programs.
  • Support adolescents with goal setting and development in a variety of areas.
  • Provide a final written report at conclusion of season highlighting successes and recommendations for change.
  • Assist in the set-up/take down of camp & weekly turnover to various user groups.
  • Contribute to implementing all health & safety protocols on-site (as assigned).
  • Ability to work non-traditional business hours (as required).
  • Assist in other duties as requested by the Camp Director.
  • Assist in conducting pre-camp and post-camp food and equipment
  • Assist with other duties outside of this description

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Minimum: Standard First Aid with CPR Certification.
  • Enthusiastic and energetic.
  • Successful applicants will be required to complete the Scouts Canada Screening and Training requirements.
