DIY Disaster Preparedness Kit

As we always say in Scouting, "Be Prepared!" In case of an emergency, it is crucial to be prepared. Make a 'Disaster Preparedness Kit' to have ready to go in a vehicle or by the front door in case you have to leave your house in a hurry.

Plan

  • What items do we need to collect and put in this kit?
  • Should we include food? What kind of food do we need to include? How often should we check this food for expiring?
  • Are there any documents we should have copies of in this kit? How could we copy them?

Do

  • As a group, start off by brainstorming items to include in the bag. These can be items like a blanket, a flashlight, batteries, a whistle, non-perishable food, a set of extra clothes, copies of important documents.
  • Then, identify where in your house this kit should go. Make a plan to tell your loved ones and household members where this kit is located so everyone knows.
  • At home with permission, you can go around and collect the items available and put them into a bag. This bag should be easy to take with you and carry, like a backpack or an over the shoulder bag.
  • If you don't have all the items you want to include, make a list of what you can buy.

Review

  • What are some of the items you will need to check and potentially change out over time?
  • Who are you going to tell about this bag?
  • When are you going to check this bag? How often are you going to do this?
  • Is there anything else you might want to add to the bag that you did not think of at first?
  • Remember to submit your activities on our Scouts for Sustainability Take Action Map

Keep it Simple

Rather than creating the kit, start by just drafting a list of items that could go in it.

Take it Further

Create a kit for you house, or your vehicle, for both summer and winter. This way, if there is an emergency at home or in the car you are prepared throughout the whole year.
