Lightbulb Moments

Have you ever had a lightbulb moment in your life where you realized someone treated you in a certain way or talked to you differently because you were a boy or girl? Talk about these times together and create your very own lightbulb as a reminder!

Plan

  • How long do you need to complete this activity?
  • What materials do you need?
  • What kinds of things will you write on your lightbulb?
  • Where will you hang your lightbulbs once completed?
  • Remember to submit your activities on our Scouts for Sustainability Take Action Map

Do

  • Discuss and share different times in your life where you realized that you or someone else were treated differently because of your gender.
  • Using paper and drawing materials, create your own “light bulb” and write down a time where someone treated you differently because of your gender (think of playing sports, lifting heavy things, wearing certain colours).
  • Hang up your lightbulbs as a daily reminder to challenge the stereotypes that surround gender!

Review

  • What do you know now that you did not know before?
  • How did you feel hearing about the “lightbulb” moments?
  • What would you change next time?
  • What can you do to challenge yourself to recognize gender stereotypes?

Materials

  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Drawing materials

Keep it Simple

  • Draw a self-portrait of yourself and hang it up to show your unique qualities!

Take it Further

  • Look in history and find some scenarios where people were treated differently because they were a boy or girl. Brainstorm some ideas about how this person could have been treated differently. Talk about how you think this person would be treated in modern times.
