Make a Neck Warmer

Learn how to make a simple piece of winter gear and practice some basic sewing!

Plan

  • What materials will you need for your neck warmer?
  • Will you use a pattern?
  • Does anyone in your Section already know how to sew? Can they teach you some tips?
  • Will you use a needle and thread, or will you cut small holes to use a bigger needle and yarn?

Do

  • Everyone will need two pieces of fleece fabric and some thread or yarn (for older Sections, they can probably use a needle and thread. Younger Sections might need a plastic needle and yarn, with pilot holes poked or cut into the fleece).
  • For smaller necks (Cubs and younger), you will need two pieces of fleece, each 59cm x 20cm. For bigger necks, your pieces should be 64cm x 23cm.
  • Check the stretch direction of the fleece – you want it to stretch along the length of the piece, rather than the width.
  • Sew together the long edges of the neck warmer (make sure to align your pieces before sewing!)
  • When you’re done, your neck warmer will look like a long tube.
  • Pull one end of the tube to flip it inside out (this will put your sewed seam on the inside).
  • Sew the two short sides together to make a circle.

Review

  • What do you know now that you did not know before?
  • What did you find challenging? What did you find easy?
  • Is there anything that you would do differently next time?
  • Remember to submit your activities on our Scouts for Sustainability Take Action Map

Keep it Simple

  • If sewing is a bit challenging for your Section, try making no-sew scarves or neck warmers and use knots to attach the pieces together!

Take it Further

  • Find a knitting or crochet pattern for a neck warmer and try making it.
