Plan
- What are some examples of insulation that you have encountered?
- What do you think might make a good insulating material?
- Do you think that more layers or less layers will be most successful?
- Is there a way that you can design your container so that you can easily check on the popsicle?
Do
- Out of any materials, design a container that will keep your popsicle cold
- If your Section is feeling competitive, put a popsicle in each of the designed containers and begin the timer. Keep one uninsulated popsicle outside the containers for comparison. Check on the popsicles every five minutes – the last popsicle that is still frozen wins!
- Don’t forget about the mess as the popsicles begin to melt.
Review
- How well insulated was your container? What could you have done to improve the insulation?
- What do you think made the winning container so successful?
- Think about insulated materials that you’ve encountered (like your home, refrigerator or thermos). How important do you think it is for insulation to be sealed?

Materials
- Popsicles
- Tape/Glue
- Cardboard
- Potential insulating materials (paper towels, fabric, wool, leaves, bubble wrap, plastic wrap, etc.)
Keep it Simple
- Review a few different household items that insulate – cooler, oven mitt, Styrofoam, etc. What does each item do to effectively insulate?
