Terrific Taffy

It’s time to syrup some fun this winter! Make yourself some tasty, terrific taffy using maple syrup and clean, fresh snow.

Plan

  • What supplies do you need for this activity?  
  • How will you collect your clean, fresh snow? 
  • How will you boil your syrup? 
  • How will you stay safe in this activity? 

Do

  • First, you’ll need a campfire to heat up your syrup!  
  • Real syrup works best. It should reach about 115 degrees Celsius. 
  • For an alternative treat, try honey and brown sugar instead of syrup!  
  • Next, add clean, fresh snow to a cookie sheet and ensure that it’s well-packed and thick enough, so that the syrup doesn’t seep through. 
  • Using a ladle, scoop the syrup into lines on the snow. Add any sprinkles or candies for an extra treat! 
  • Place your popsicle stick onto the syrup when it is sticky and roll it to gather all the ooey-gooey goodness!

  • Popsicle sticks 
  • Cookie sheet 
  • Clean snow 

Keep it Simple

  • No snow? Make some snow indoors by blending ice cubes to make shaved ice! This can become your snow. Heat the syrup on a stove and do this activity completely indoors.

  • Do you know how to tap a maple tree? Visit a sugar shack or an expert that taps their own maple sap! Perhaps you could even tap and join in on the boiling process to see exactly how maple syrup is made!
