Songs, skits and cheers are important parts of Scouting. Not only can they be a lot of fun, they also help youth develop self-confidence and acquire a love for performing.
Here’s a selection of the songs, skits and cheers you can find in the Scouts Canada Campfire Book—available from the Scout Shop, where all proceeds go back into Scouting.
Song: Alice the Camel
Tune: “Dry Bones”
Alice the Camel has __ humps,
Alice the Camel has __ humps,
Alice the Camel has __ humps,
So go, Alice, go!
Boom, boom, boom.
Action – Form line(s) or circle. Link arms around waist of person on each side. When singing each verse, ben knees. Swing hips to right, then left, then right on the “Boom, boom, boom” line. Start with “5 humps”, then 4, 3, etc.

Up in my head to stay.

3rdverse: Down in my feet
4thverse: All over me

I’ve got the Scouting spirit,
All over me,
All over me, to stay.
Action—For more spirit, point to each part of the body as you sing.
Skit: The Old Fisherman
Cast:The old fisherman, several other ice fishers
The old fisherman is ice fishing, sitting on a stool and pantomiming jigging at a hole and pulling up one big fish after another.
The other ice fishers sit on their stools nearby, having no luck. After the old fisherman has caught several fish, one of the other ice fishers goes to the old fisherman and asks what kind of bait he’s using.
The old fisherman mumbles an unclear reply and goes back to fishing. The ice fisher who asked the question shrugs and goes back to his or her stool.
The scene is repeated until the last of the other ice fishers approaches the old fisherman and asks what kind of bait he’s using.
The old fisherman spits something out of his mouth into his hand and says: “I told you guys! Worms! But you’ve got to keep them warm!”
Skit: Bacon Tree
Cast:The General, The Sergeant and three Scouts
One of the characters sets the scene. The army is bivouacked somewhere in the wilds of Canada.
The general instructs the sergeant to send out a scout to “reconnoitre the bushes”. The scout is no sooner out of sight when he screams, staggers back on stage, announces, “Sergeant, it is a bacon tree!” and dies.
Unable to understand this strange message, the sergeant and the general send out another scout. The scene repeats until all scouts are dead.
Finally, the sergeant goes out himself. Again, a scream. The sergeant, mortally wounded, drags himself back on stage and declares, “It’s not a bacon tree. It’s a ham bush!”
