Pioneering Adventure

This year at First Topsails year end camp titled pioneer trails the beavers, cubs, scouts, and venturers went on an awesome pioneering adventure that incorporated many of scoutings program elements like linking, youth led, and STEM. The adventure was a team challenge where all of the youth at camp where split into four teams with equal members being beavers, cubs, scouts, and venturers.

Each team was given an area where they had the task of creating their own campsite by constructing camp gadgets like brooms, tripods, and drying racks using pieces of wood and their lashing skills. In addition to this general guideline each team also had to construct a gateway into their campsite which was anything from a drawbridge to a tunnel like structure as well each team had to decorate their own flag including a camp name like “camp lets go” and “camp know one could come up with a name” and display it somewhere in their campsite.

This activity went extremely well and engaged all youth on the team. The venturers led the group for the most part wile teaching other youth like the scouts the skills that they had learned long ago like how to lash and other skills. At the same time younger youth like beavers and cubs had a blast coming up with the team name, decorating the flag as well as deciding which gadgets to build. In the end judges had a difficult time choosing the top team and had to draw to decide, the winners who enjoyed the privilege of being first in line for the BBQ lunch on Sunday.
