Taking care of the world (and having fun while we’re at it!)

Two key values comprise the heart of the Beaver-Scout Promise and Law: first, a Beaver has fun; second, he or she should take care of the world.

I went to check how these two concepts manifested themselves at the 1st Lennxoville Beaver Colony, and found ample evidence of both.

Several initiatives were undertaken by our Beavers this year for the benefit of the community and the environment. One of them was the collection and donation of blankets and towels to the local animal shelter to keep the animals warm and cozy. Posters explaining the project were created by our Beavers as part of the preps.

A separate activity was dedicated to the topic of beekeeping. We learned about the importance of bees for the ecology, and had the chance to dress up with a beekeeper’s protective suit. “It’s like Halloween!” exclaimed an amused 6-year-old as he emerged from behind the beekeeping veil.

Nature has taken center-stage in our gardening activity too. We learned how to plant a seed, water it, and care for it, and had a great time dipping our hands in the soil (and building mud pies with the leftover!)

My conclusion after observing our Beavers in action, is that taking care of the world is lots of fun indeed.
