Youth Leadership Training

Developing Well-Rounded Young Leaders, Better Prepared For Success in the World

“Putting a challenge in front of the youth that they have to overcome to develop leadership skills is a good method for learning.”
— Scouter

Scouts Canada’s all-new Youth Leadership Training courses have been created for all five Sections, from Beaver Scouts to Rover Scouts! In fact, the program was spearheaded by a team of youth from across Canada.

After our successful pilots in the spring of 2018, we’ve incorporated your feedback to build an even stronger program with a soft launch for October 2018—offering Youth Leadership Training for all Sections from Beavers to Rovers, with additional materials to follow as we lead up to our full launch in 2019.

The new Youth Leadership Training courses follow the practices, principles and resources of The Canadian Path including Activities, which give the program flexibility and help youth to Plan, Do and Review adventures they choose as a team. Youth Leadership Training represents the exciting evolution of FAST, FLEX and FOCUS, and an opportunity for Scouts Canada to better fulfill its Mission of developing well-rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world.

Each group of youth participants can create a unique collection of adventures to explore five leadership knowledge areas, including Becoming a Leader, Communication, Plan-Do-Review, Problem Solving and Teamwork. Youth from older Sections facilitate the adventures—while adult Scouters take a step back from the action.

Youth Leadership Training: FAQ

Scouts Canada’s new Youth Leadership Training program has been developed to ensure our leadership workshops are aligned with The Canadian Path and relevant to today’s youth.

Scouts Canada’s new Youth Leadership Training has been developed by a team of senior youth volunteers from across Canada, with the support of experienced adult Scouters and Scouts Canada staff. The team included the National Youth Commissioner, Assistant National Youth Commissioners and Council Youth Commissioners.

No. Youth leadership at Scouts Canada and within our Canadian Path program empowers youth to decide for themselves whether or not they would like to participate programming like Youth Leadership Training.

Participants should select two or more Activities for each of the five knowledge areas of the Youth Leadership Training program.

Next, they Plan, Do and Review the adventures described on those Activities. When ten or more adventures have been concluded, participants should review the overall experience of their Youth Leadership Training.

See the Youth Leadership Training Facilitator Guide and Youth Leadership Training Participant Guides for more information.

Ideally, Youth Leadership Training is completed as a series at camp, as a dedicated workshop or over sequential weeknight meetings.

There are five steps to adding Youth Leadership Training to a profile on MyScouts.ca.

No, Youth Leadership Training is not a requirement for the Top Section Award; however, time committed to facilitating Youth Leadership Training can be included when tracking hours of community service. Yes, Scouters can facilitate Youth Leadership Training; however, it is best to have senior youth facilitate for youth from younger Sections whenever possible. It may be helpful to coordinate with a Section from another Group to make this possible, or to arrange Youth Leadership Training for youth from a number of Groups at the same time (likewise facilitated by more senior youth).

Contact your Council Relationship Manager or Scouting Relationship Manager for support to host Youth Leadership Training.

Youth Leadership Training badges are worn on the right sleeve of the Cub, Scout, Venturer and Rover uniforms, just below the Group crest.

Yes, badges are available at Scoutshop.ca.

Scouts Canada’s new Youth Leadership Training helps our organization to better fulfill our Mission: To help develop well-rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world.

Youth Leadership Training supports personal progression and fosters a variety of leadership styles. The program is by no means a “one size fits all” approach—it is both flexible and youth-led. Best of all, Youth Leadership Training is fun! There are opportunities for many different games and activities, all of which help youth to become stronger and more confident leaders.

FAST, FLEX and FOCUS are no longer supported programs; however, youth who have completed these programs should still be celebrated, and what insights and techniques they gained through these programs remain valid and valuable. Scouts Canada’s new Youth Leadership Training better reflects the practices of The Canadian Path and offers a great program opportunity in service of our Mission: To help develop well-rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world.

Yes. The new Youth Leadership Training offers new content, new adventures and new skills for youth who have already taken part in FAST, FLEX or FOCUS training.

Absolutely! Youth who have completed FAST, FLEX and FOCUS should continue to proudly wear their badges on their uniforms if they so choose.
