Interviews For Success

Have you ever wondered what it may be like to be a vet? How about a fire fighter? To better understand work, interview an adult to learn more about their career and the events that unfolded along their journeys.

Plan

  • What do you already know about working?
  • What types of jobs do people have?
  • What is it like to work?
  • Is it challenging to find a job?

Do

  • You will begin by thinking of and finding a person to interview. That may be a parent, grandparent, loved one, teacher, leader, mentor, etc. As a group create a list of questions to ask about an individual’s job.
  • You may want to know:
  • What is your job?
  • How did you get the job?
  • How many hours do you work?
  • Is your job hard?
  • Did you need to go to school to have your job?
  • After this list is complete, you will then conduct an interview asking these questions and learning more about this person’s job. The interview could be recorded, scribed, or even filmed!

Review

  • What do you know now that you did not know before?
  • Could you do their job?
  • Would you like to do their job?
  • Do you think you would prefer a different job, if so, what?
  • Remember to submit your activities on our Scouts for Sustainability Take Action Map

Materials

  • Recording Device
  • Paper
  • Writing Utensils
  • Guests

Keep it Simple

  • Keep it simple by conducting a group interview. Bring in a few guests that the entire group will ask questions to. Complete the same process of brainstorming questions, then take turns and interview the individual as a group!
  • For Virtual - This activity can be easily translated to an online setting. It would be ideal to brainstorm questions before a guest/guests arrive and then interview them during the online time together.

Take it Further

  • Take it further by conducting a series of interviews. Take an opportunity to talk to many different people and learn about various jobs. If filmed, these interviews could create a ‘job bank’ that others may view/listen to if curious!
