YOUTH
LEADERSHIP

Scouts Canada’s Mission is to develop well-
rounded youth, better prepared for success in the
world. Stimulated through teamwork, personal
challenges and exploration; youth develop the
self-confidence, values and problem-solving skills
that will guide them through every future
adventure, at every stage of life.

A YOUTH-LED JOURNEY
ON THE CANADIAN PATH

The Canadian Path is the way Scouting is done in Canada. Through
this program, Scouts pave their own path to outdoor adventure and
fun by setting their own goals, creating organized plans to achieve
these goals, and collectively reflecting on their experiences and
personal development. Youth leadership is one of the many ways that
the Scouts Canada program helps youth develop into critical thinkers
and team players, better prepared for success in the world.

Scouts Canada was excited to welcome a new team of volunteers and
staff dedicated to implementing The Canadian Path and fostering
youth leadership through the program. The Program Support Team
helped Groups through four main areas: In-Section Support, Outdoor
Adventure, Events, and ScoutCons. The enthusiasm and commitment
of this team shined through in 2019-2020, as they supported youth
with their Scouting journey.

Scouting at Home
"We’re still Scouting."

Youth were able to stay active and engaged, through our Scouting at Home program, which provided 15 weeks of fun, games, and adventures. With an exciting new theme every week, families were able to access tons of games and activities so youth could continue their Scouting journey.

Supporting Scouters

We are extremely proud of our Scouters who facilitated a virtual program so youth could continue to develop leadership skills and resilience for future success. The Program Support Team was there to help them along the way.

Virtual Scouting resources were created to help Scouters deliver great, safe online meetings.

Youth, volunteers and staff contributed to a Scouting at Home YouTube series that featured activity ideas, ranging from STEM to community service from home, designed to encourage physical activity, creativity, and connection.

"Scouting at Home kept our community engaged and active, while maintaining health and safety practices during the beginning stages of COVID-19. For Scouting and non-Scouting youth alike, Scouting at Home offered guided activities like STEM initiatives and Outdoor Adventure Skills exploration. The tips were easy to put into play at home or online. It helped youth stay occupied with dynamic games or projects other than screen time, amidst school closures while many parents were working from home. It was a program for children to continue learning outside of the classroom, while having fun along the way."

SCOUTING YOUTH MAKING
MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTIONS
TO CREATING A BETTER WORLD

Scouts allows youth to make meaningful contributions to creating a
better world as an active member of their community. As Canadians
were faced with COVID-19, our Scouting youth demonstrated
resilience and leadership by helping those in need.

A YOUTH-LED
SCOUTS CANADA

Scouts Canada both serves and is led by youth in communities across
the country. From the Board of Governors to Councils, youth play a
key role in guiding the organization to enable even more youth to
benefit from Scouting.

THE ADVENTURE
OF A LIFETIME

Scouting provides kids with a range of activities and experiences that
no other youth program can match. Outdoor discovery, community
service, physical activity, and hands-on learning are at the heart of
our Scouting program. It’s the perfect place for kids to
be kids, to make lifelong friendships, and to become better prepared for success
in the world.

Scouts delivered its promise to over 50,000 Canadian youth in
2019-2020. Kids had fun adventures discovering new things and
experiences they wouldn’t have elsewhere. Along the way, Scouting
youth developed into capable, confident and well-rounded
individuals, better prepared for success in the world.

ENSURING NO YOUTH IS LEFT BEHIND

With our No One Left Behind program, Scouts Canada provides
children and youth from low-income families with the opportunity to
participate in Scouting.

Scouts Canada’s No One Left Behind program subsidizes membership
fees and other related costs such as uniforms, outdoor equipment and
camps, so that all youth can develop life skills pertinent to their future.

IN THE 2019-2020
SCOUTING YEAR:

Without No One Left Behind, Paula shared that "[Scouting] would not be possible". She goes on to say that she is a "firm believer that all kids and young people with an interest in Scouting should have the opportunity to be a part of its life-changing experiences, even if their parents can’t afford it."

EXPLORING GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

Coming out of the World Jamboree that Scouts Canada co-hosted in
2019, there were a number of international adventures scheduled for
this past Scouting year. Unfortunately, the pandemic brought many
of these to a grinding halt, causing large events and international
travel to be entirely postponed or cancelled. This hasn’t meant that
international Scouting has been taking a break though!

Through the use of technology, initiatives like pen pal programming,
virtual jamborees, and campfires have helped bring together not just
Scouts from across Canada, but across the world. Furthermore, a new
International Team started its mandate September 1st, 2020, under
the leadership of John Estrella, our new International Commissioner.
John was previously a National Commissioner for Scouts Canada and
has a strong international background. He will be working with his
team over the coming months in the following areas: expand the
services and communications offered by the international team;
develop tools and resources to help Sections participate in
international programs without leaving Canada (such as the "Scouts
for Sustainability"); support Scouts
planning adventures abroad (when it is safe to do so); and strengthen
the relationship between Scouts Canada and other National Scouting
Organisations (NSO’s).
