Venturer Scouts is an opportunity for youth age 15-17 to explore their potential and ambition in an inclusive environment, forging friendships with others who share their passion to “Climb Higher”. Opening the door to exciting, real-life, hands-on experiences and outdoor adventures, Venturer Scouts learn to nurture an active and healthy lifestyle. Venturer Scouts work to acquire the knowledge and skills for career development; and participate in thrilling outdoor adventures. Weekend events, extended hikes, Leave-No-Trace camping, spiritual reflection, community service and more, round out the Venturer experience.
A Venturer Scout Section is called a “Company” and a Company may be organized into smaller teams called “Expedition Teams”. However, as a Section with older youth, less emphasis is placed on Company structure and more on building a team that takes advantage of the entire skillset of the group. Venturer Scouts may muster into larger groups that provide greater social-development opportunities and allow Venturer Scouts to work together to ensure everyone reaches his or her personal summit. The motto for Venturer Scouts is: Challenge.
As experienced Scouts, Venturer Scouts are charting their own path and more emphasis is placed on personal development and growth and exploring real-world experiences that prepare them for future success. Venturer Scouts might be planning, preparing and embarking on a multi-day paddling excursion, travelling across the globe to meet other Scouts as part of an international jamboree or instilling their skills and know-how to assist younger Scouting sections.
Vocational Venturers – Within the Venturer Scout Section there are some groups that are geared towards specific vocations, such as First-Aid, Police, Fire, Paramedic and even Culinary! These Venturer Sections generally focus on specialized training in a particular field. Often these groups will be a combined Venturer/Rover group. Groups focused on emergency training may be referred to as “MedVents” - check out Medvents.ca - a site maintained by the 1st Downsview Group, to get some insight into the types of things a vocational Venturer group does.
Scouts builds leaders, enabling youth to lead their own path toward outdoor adventure and fun. Through Youth-led programming, youth discover the best in themselves taking on new challenges and experience new things they wouldn’t elsewhere. Along the way, they develop into well-rounded youth better prepared for success in the world.
Every young person deserves to experience the world of adventure, friendship and self-development that Scouting offers. The No One Left Behind program provides financial subsidies to families in need, so every child can experience the fun of Scouting.
Learning by doing is at the heart of the Scouting program. The Venturer Scouts program covers a number of areas including: environment & outdoors, creative express, leadership, active & healthy living, citizenship, belief & values and outdoor adventure skills. As a Section with older youth, Venturer Scouts are encouraged to set personal goals and work towards those goals with the assistance of their Scouting Advisor. Many of the areas Venturer Scouts may focus on are listed below.
Throughout their time with Venturer Scouts, youth may be working towards a number of different badges, whether it’s collectively with their Company or individually on their own. Below are all of the badges’ Venturer Scouts can explore and earn.
Personal Progression Badges fit with the Section framework and are presented following the year-end
review or the personal progression review.
The Venturer Scout uniform consists of the shirt, neckerchief and neckerchief slide. The Venturer Scout uniform is available at scoutshop.ca. The neckerchief and slide will be supplied by the Group.
